RULES & REGULATIONS: 5 vs. 5 Beach Volleyball

Niagara Peninsula Sports is all about being active, healthy, and full of life. Therefore we rely on dignity and integrity of every individual player. We encourage players to play at a competitive level but to keep mutual respect between teammates and other players. It is in everyone’s best interest to abide by these actions to ensure sportsmanship and the spirit of the game.

Game Time and Duration:

Each game will start at the designated time promptly. It is in the interest of all players to be at the scheduled court 15 minutes before each match to allow proper warm up and start time. There will be two matches played on the scheduled day of play. Matches will consist of two games up to 15 against the same team. Teams must start their own games and keep track of their own score. If a team is late by 5 minutes after the initial start time, they will forfeit the first match by a score of 15-0. If a team is late by 15 minutes they will forfeit both games by a score of 15-0 to allow proper starting time for the next set of matches. Teams must win by at least 2 points when the tally of 15 is reached. If teams are separated by less than two points at 15, the first team to reach 17 points will be declared the winner of the game.

Number of Players:

• A team consists of 5 players. The team must have at least 2 women and 2 men on the court at all times.
• DEFAULTS – If a team cannot court a proper team after 5 minutes of game time the match will be forfeited.
• A team can play with a minimum of 4 players, as long as 2 men and women are on the court. HOWEVER: If the team only has 3 players it is up to the discretion of both team captains to decide whether to play or forfeit. THIS MUST BE DECIDED BEFORE THE START OF THE MATCH, AND WILL COUNT IN STANDINGS!
• If both teams forfeit the match it will be recorded as a 0-0 loss.
• Captains are allowed to bring sub(s) for their team during the season, but a waiver must be signed by the individual(s) before stepping onto the field.
• Teams are not allowed to stack their roster during playoffs to allow fair play and competition.
• Players must be 18 or older to participate in this activity.

Equipment/Game Sheets:

• All personal belonging should be placed as close to the court posts as possible or pushed up against the fence to avoid any injuries. Please keep children away from the court area.
• There will be 2 matches played for the night, consisting of two games. Each match will be played against a different team. A match will run for 25 minutes with each possession rally being a scoring point.
• Each win will receive a point. If the top two teams are tied at the end of the season the FUN FACTOR will decide the tiebreaker. If teams remain tied, then goal differential will be responsible for determining positions in the standings.
• Each individual must sign a waiver before stepping onto the court, even if it is for one match.
• It is up to the responsibility of both team captains to submit their game score to NP Sports before 5:00pm the following day. Scores should be entered online through the online game score report. Results will be updated weekly.
• Playoffs – scores are to be submitted through online score submission, win or loss, on the day of play.
• Games will be played light rain or shine (unless city closes field or due to lightning). If lightning cancels any games, all games will be cancelled for the night.
• LIGHTNING POLICY – if thunder and lightning are less than 30 seconds apart the game must be stopped. Any match can resume after 15 minutes if the lightning and thunder have moved away. If weather still persists after 15 minutes the games will be cancelled. The match will count towards standing as long as halfway of the game was played or one team reached 8 points or more. In event of cancellation of the match before hand, neither a win nor loss will be awarded and therefore not count toward standings.

Cancellation Policy:

• Cancellation can be due to weather or field closures by the city.
• First cancellation – Games will not be rescheduled or refunded.
• Second cancellation – NP Sports will attempt to reschedule cancelled games on the day of play. No credit will be given for scheduled games.
• Third cancellation or more – NP Sports will attempt to reschedule cancelled games on the day of play. No credit will be given for scheduled games.

Referees:

There are no referees, so please be honest and keep a high level of sportsmanship throughout the game. If there is a dispute of any kind, please be considerate while discussing the foul. If a decision cannot be reached between the two teams about the foul then the point should be reserved.

Playing:

• A player may never block a serve.
• A block is not counted as a hit.
• No lifting or scooping the ball.
• Maximum of 3 hits per side.
• If the ball lands on the line it is in.

Player Rotation:

• Rotate new players onto the court before a team starts a new server. Players must rotate positions by following the order: from back right, to back left, to middle, to front left, to front right.
• Players in the left and right back positions are not allowed to leave the ground while volleying and or spiking the ball at any time.

Playing the Body

Players may hit the ball with any part of their body, excluding their feet.

Serving

• A player is NOT ALLOWED TO VOLLEY A SERVE.
• A player may serve anywhere along the baseline.
• A maximum of 5 serves per player. If a player has 5 consecutive serves the serving team will rotate and hand the ball to the next team member to serve.

Contacting the Net:

A player cannot touch the net at any time during the game (if the net is touched, the point will go to the other team). The player may pass the centerline during play as long as they do not interfere with the play of the opposing player.

Playoffs

• Playoff games will be played the best 2 out of 3. Each game will be played to the first team to reach 15 points. The game must be won by 2 with no point cap. In the third game teams will switch sides after one team has scored 7 points.
• Each player must have played at least half of the season games in order to play in the playoffs. This prevents teams from adding “ringers” in the playoffs. If an extra individual is needed for playoffs they must talk to the convener and get approval.

Abuse and Alcohol

Any abuse, either verbal or physical, WILL NOT BE TOLERATED by the league. First offence will be a verbal warning to the team or individual followed by immediate ejection of the league the second time. There will be no refund or reimbursement. Teams are responsible for each other’s teammates to encourage sportsmanship around the league. Niagara Peninsula Sports reserves the right to eject any player or team without a warning or refund after any initial incident. Alcohol is not permitted at any game, offenders will be asked to leave the league without refund. Playing while intoxicated is prohibited. Please keep Niagara Peninsula Sports a safe and enjoyable night out.
